Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, the majority of them can be linked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself a bit of time to view and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system might be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises near the end of their life. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home can start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies might notice more symptoms. A couple other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
